Deputy Director in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mr. Peter Audu(standing) flanked by the guest lecturer from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof(Mrs) Uzoma Okoye and programme officer, Akin Aleshi during the capacity building workshop for social workers in the ministry at the Federal School of Social Works, Emene, Enugu recently.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, has called on social workers across the country to embrace continuous self-development to handle mental, societal and workplace challenges.
The permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, made the call while addressing participants at the capacity building workshop for social workers in the ministry at the Federal School of Social Works, Emene, Enugu.
Sani-Gwarzo stated that the training was organized for the social workers in order for them to acquire necessary knowledge, skills, orientation, values and competence for effective service delivery.
He added that the training became necessary as modern social work practice had become increasingly complex in dealing with emerging social challenges in the country.
The permanent secretary challenged participants to pay special attention to the training, as they would be expected to be in good stead to assist the nation overcome her social problems.
He stressed the need to always encourage the nation’s workforce through training so as to bring out the best in them.
Sani-Gwarzo, who was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Director at the Ministry, Mr. Peter Audu, said “As we are determined in our efforts at providing quality service delivery to all our targeted groups as we gear towards a new phase in achieving our mandate and at the same time, I assure all the staff of the Ministry, that they will not be excluded or neglected in the scheme of things as we progress”.
Sani-Gwarzo said that by putting employees through relevant courses that tie in well with their roles, it could equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to feel confident in performing their duties.
“This in turn can bring positive team morale, giving workers a sense of purpose towards their work. These and more are the benefits envisaged to be gained as you participate in this training.
“For any organization to bring about the best results in the sector it is operating, or amongst the other players in the economy, it must consider training of its staff very important and make it sacrosanct. By training, employees are raised up to the levels of increasing productivity and efficiency which engenders profitability that boost the worth of the organization, which in turn helps it to consolidate and remain competitive”. Gwarzo noted
“As professional social workers responsible for social service delivery in the whole spectrum of social work practices of the Social Development Sector, we cannot afford not to keep abreast with the full knowledge and information on the best practice as required of the profession. It is my genuine advice that participants avail themselves of the opportunity to engage positively by contributing and giving the Resource Persons maximum cooperation so that the purpose of this programme can be fully achieved”, he said.
