NSCDC operatives, not gunmen allegedly killed Imo nursing mother, baby

Those who shot and killed a nursing mother and her eight-month-old baby along Wetheral Road Owerri, Imo state on Monday were operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps(NSCDC) and not unknown gunmen, investigation has revealed.

It was also gathered that the woman’s mother, who was accompanying her, was equally hit by the bullets.

According to an eyewitness account the mother with child was standing by the road side, waiting for a commercial bus, unfortunately the perpetrators riding in a fast moving van released some gun shots that wrecked the havoc.

Though police had cordoned off the arena, when contacted the police public relations officers ASP Henry Okoye confirmed the incident, he said an eyewitness account available to him showed that the bullet came from a fast moving vehicle of the NSCDC patrol team.

He disclosed that that victims were rushed to the hospital but the child was confirmed dead on arrival by a doctor.

Okoye said investigation was ongoing into the the matter and soonest the perpetrators will be brought to book.

The commandant of the Nigeria security and civil defense corps NSCDC Mr Matthew Ovie when reacting to the development in a phone call conversation with our correspondent said the incident still stands as mere allegation because it has not been proven. 

He said though someone came to the command to report that security men in the vehicle that perpetrated the dastardly act had uniforms with red curler indicating they could be NSCDC personnel.

Ovia said the claim is not enough to prove that they actually his men, he maintained that investigation is ongoing into the matter and soon the true position of the matter will be known to the public.
