The governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has called on residents of the state to establish more co-operative societies to reduce the economic pressure in the state.
Soludo made the call during the first anniversary and launching ceremony of ADSi Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Ltd on Friday in Awka.
The governor who was rerepsented at the occasion by his deputy chief of Protocol, Mr Chinedu Nwoye said the involvement of greater percentage of the population in co-operative was capable of reducing economic pressure.
He said that his administration perceived co-operative societies as a viable measure towards enhancing the socio-economic well-being of the people.
Soludo who also stressed the need for transparent management of the body, said he was confident that ADSi Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society would go far.
“It takes transparency, honesty and integrity to manage a Co-operative Society, I am confident that with the names of people behind this group, the Co-operative will go far”, he said.
Dr Ogochukwu Soludo, chairman of ADSi Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society in an address of welcome said the group formed one year ago was made up of like-minded people.
He said within one year of it’s operations that the body has made tremendous achievements, saying “we are looking at a Co-operative that would be a big conglomerate”.
Ogochukwu younger brother of the governor, hinted that the group plan to establish discount shops across the state with the aim of reducing prices of goods especially foodstuffs.
“Though our primary objective is to enhance the welfare of members, we still believe that we owe a duty to the society that is to provide service to the community.”

Mrs Norah Egwuatu, Vice President, Institute of Co-operative Professionals of Nigeria, South-East Zone said co-operative societies are business groups that promote both economy and well-being of the people.
Egwuatu, the guest speaker, said co-operative could push poverty away if properly managed.
She listed types of co-operative societies, adding that viability of the group depends on financial contributions of members and transparent management.
