Two kidnappers killed as police foil kidnap attempt in Enugu

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Enugu State have successfully neutralized two armed gunmen on a kidnapping spree at Ogbeke Nike along the notorious Ugwuogo Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road.

The incident, which happened on Sunday, saw the gunmen attempting to kidnap several road users, including a former council chairman, on the road. 

The hoodlums, it was gathered, had barricaded the road and started shooting indiscriminately, thus forcing some hapless motorists to stop.

However, the situation took a twist when the police, who were escorting the unnamed former local government chairman, bravely intervened.

The ensuing gun battle, it was further gathered, led to the killing of two members of the armed gang, while one of the policemen died on his way to the hospital.

The spokesperson of the state Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident, in a statement, revealing that other members of the gang managed to escape into the nearby forest, sustaining fatal gunshot wounds.

The police were able to recover an AK-47 rifle with two magazines, as well as 82 and 16 rounds of live ammunition of 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm calibers, respectively. Additionally, a cutlass and two mobile phones belonging to the hoodlums were also seized.

Meanwhile, a former chairman of Udenu local government area of Enugu State, Dr Godwin Abonyi and wife have reportedly escaped from a suspected kidnap attempt on the same road weekend.

In a viral video seen by our correspondent, Abonyi’s vehicle was riddled with bullets while the tyres of his SUV were destroyed but his driver managed to escape with it.

The former chairman was not available to confirm the incident.

Meanwhile, the state commissioner of police, Kanayo Uzuegbu has expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of the gallant officer.

He commended the entire police personnel, as well as the Neighbourhood Watch Group and Forest Guards involved in the operation that foiled the kidnap activities, for their exceptional courage and commendable performance.

The commissioner reiterated the unwavering commitment of the police to relentlessly combat and eradicate unrepentant criminals, particularly those involved in violent crimes, from the state.
