Enugu Catholic Diocese confirms kidnap of priest

The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has confirmed the abduction of one of its priests, Rev. Fr. Marcellinus Obioma Okide.

Confirming the incident in the diocesan newspaper, The Choice Flame online, the Diocesan Chancellor and Secretary, Rev. Fr. Wilfred Chidi Agubuchie, said Fr. Okide was abducted on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at approximately 5:00 pm while traveling along the Eke-Egede-Affa Road in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. 

Fr. Okide, who serves at St. Mary Amofia-Agu Affa Parish, in Udi LGA, was en route to his parish when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Six other travellers, The Nation learned, were also kidnapped on the same road alongside the priest.

It was learnt that the kidnappers have already made telephone contacts with relatives of the victims, demanding N100 million as ransom before the Catholic Priest and other captives could be released.

It was further gathered that the kidnappers had left the children of the victims inside their car crying helplessly before police operatives arrived the scene to evacuate them.

Describing the incident as ‘troubling’, the diocese issued a fervent appeal to the faithful and the public at large for prayers, hoping for the swift and safe release of Fr. Okide. 

Additionally, the diocese called for a change of heart on the part of the kidnappers.
