The Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) in Imo state, Angela Fagbenide, has disclosed that several items belonging to the victims of the Owerri ghastly road accident.
The incident, which happened Wednesday, when two hummer buses, which collided along Owerri/Aba road near airport Junction, saw no fewer three persons confirmed dead.
One of the 18-seater hummer buses was fully loaded with passengers who were traveling from Aba to Owerri,.it was learned.
Reacting to the development, Fagbenide said, “Several items including cash were also recovered at the scene of the accident belonging to the victims.
“They will be handed to their relatives later today.”
She called on the public to disregard the social media news where it was stated that eighteen passengers onboard died on the spot, describing such as untrue.
According to her, while three passengers died on the spot, others sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
An eyewitness said the bus overtook their own at Olakwu junction while his driver was picking passengers, but by the time their car got to the spot of the accident, he discovered it was the bus that zoomed passed theirs.
He described the incident as horrible as some passengers, according to him, died on the spot.
”It was a fatal one. I saw it with my two naked eyes. The bus was actually overspeeding and overtook our own at Olakwu junction when our driver was picking passengers. On getting to the spot, we couldn’t believe it.
Some of them died instantly. Even the two buses were beyond repair.”
The FRSC boss confirmed that both drivers of the two buses and a woman died instantly while the rest aboard sustained various degrees of injuries.She said one of the two buses which was enroute Aba was carrying goods with a passenger who also sustained severe injury.
According to her, “about seven victims of the accident who were admitted at IAWA hospital in Ngor-Okpala LGA, have been treated and discharged”.
