Villagers burn down houses of suspected hard drug dealers in Imo

Angry youths of Irete Autonomous Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, have set ablaze the houses of suspected illicit drug dealers in the area.

The incident, which took place on Thursday at Umuelele village off Owerri/Onitsha Expressway, where the youths, fueled by frustration, resolved to take action against the scourge of illicit drugs plaguing the community.

A village source revealed that the youths have previously issued warnings and sent letters to the drug barons operating within their vicinity, demanding their immediate departure from the area.

However, these warnings fell on deaf ears, prompting the youths to take matters into their own hands by setting their residences ablaze.

The source said further, “the source of the youths’ ire was a cluster of shanties situated behind St. Mary’s Hospital where drug peddlers congregated to dispense narcotine, including the head-popping ‘mkpuru-mmiri’.

“Despite repeated warnings from the local authorities and community leaders against the proliferation of narcotine, the drug dealers remained adamant, disregarding all of the admonitions.

“It was for this reason that the youths took it upon themselves to take action by incinerating the houses of the drug dealers.”
