An Enugu-based housewife, Mrs. Nkoli Nzekwe, has cried out for justice for her husband, Chief Tochukwu Nzekwe, whom she alleged has been remanded in Enugu Correctional facility by the police on a trumped up charge of promoting local war.
Mrs. Nzekwe, in a statement she issued on Monday, narrated that her husband, a prominent businessman, who is the Managing Director/CEO of a renowned Road construction firm, Toshel Construction Ltd, was arrested in a matter that did not involve him.
According to the distraught woman, one of her husband’s company’s trucks had mistakenly driven on a newly tarred road and scratched the road being handled by Eketeson, for which they gave the driver a brutal and near fatal assault.
“So, he(the driver) sued Eketeson and his policemen for infringing on his fundamental rights and demanding damages over the physical assault and near death experience”, the woman said.
She expressed surprise that while her husband went about his normal business on September 26, 2024, he was unaware that he was being tracked by a group of men led by an individual known as “Lion-King,” who allegedly identified himself as an officer from the Commissioner of Poluce’s office Enugu.
“He was accompanied by three police officers attached to Eketeson resourses Ltd.
“These men, alongside the police officers, illegally detained my husband, Chief Nzekwe at Oakland Hotels, where he had been lured under the pretense of a business meeting. Once there, my husband was ambushed, and his phone was forcibly seized to prevent him from contacting his lawyers or relatives. He was violently assaulted, abducted, handcuffed, and blindfolded.
“As his illegal detention escalated, my husband was swiftly arraigned before Magistrate Chukwuani around 5:20 PM, same day of his arrest, with three fully armed police officers present in the courtroom, creating an intimidating atmosphere.
“To my husband’s chagrin, they mischievously profered a charge that is unconnected with the malicious damage claim they had hitherto listed on his arraignment notice. They deliberately charged him for promoting native war, an offence totaly unconnected with the damage said to have been occassioned by my husband’s company’s driver; which even does not concern my husband as a person.
“These mischievous schemers insured that they got him remanded in custody, as the magisterate declined jurisdiction to entertain the matter. The question I ask is, how does the scratching of the road concern my husband, Chief Nzekwe as a person?”, she queried.
She therefore called on the Inspector General of police to wade into the matter, appraise and correct same in the interest of peace.
